  • Project: Picnic Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, Edmonds, WA
    This is in response to concerns raised about the site temperature conditions regarding the installation of glass unit masonry by Seattle Glass Block at the above referenced project.

    The specifications in our literature regarding temperature limits during installation were purposely written with a psychological effect in mind; that is, to hopefully get masons to at least install above freezing conditions. I duplicated these requirements in the MSJC (Masonry Standards Joint Committee) Masonry Standard of which I have been a member since 1992. I authored the specification to be on the conservative side since many experienced masons have never laid glass block.

    Mr. Brian Wright and Seattle Glass Block are experienced in glass unit masonry. In my almost 30 year’s tenure with Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, I have had the best of business relationships with Seattle Glass Block for over two decades. As far as I can remember, I have never been called to comment on any Seattle Glass Block project.

    Prior to this notice, I reviewed three daily weather data reports (Jan 25-27, 2010) from the Everett Weather Station. In all three days, the minimum temperature never reached freezing and the average temperature was over 40°F. As a precaution, Brian Wright told me that he heated his mixing water when preparing his mortar. It just so happens that heating the mixing water during mortar preparation is one of the two options required by the MSJC standard when temperatures are from 40°F to 32°F. The other option is heating the sand.

    Further to this project’s benefit, Seattle Glass Block offers a ten-year warranty on their work. This is probably at least twice as long a warranty period than any other construction trade. It is a testament to not only the quality of workmanship, but also the confidence level of Seattle Glass Block’s work.
